I’m not really in the habit of applauding TV spots. I find that television can be so disposable these days and through a general disconnection with it, I have seemed to develop an unreasonable and ungrounded distrust of TV spots – Most of which are often highly imaginative and incredibly well polished. But a couple of days ago I caught my first glimpse of director Marc Craste’s spot for BBC Sport’s coverage of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics and couldn’t help but feel that I’ve missing out.
This short, wintry animated tale depicts an Inuit hero who goes forth to rescue a sacred stone, which has been pilfered by a spectral bear. We follow his winter sport-flecked antics through the frozen Canadian countryside to a cracking folklore finale. The CGI animation is gorgeously slick, the lighting and after effects are dark and brooding and the fierce action is as over-dramatic as a we have come to expect from the BBC Sport offices. This a TV spot done well and I’m rather anxious that this was the only one the BBC have up their sleeve for the Winter Olympics. I’ll be keeping my eyes out for more. So should you.
