I first came across Sroop Sunar’s work when her profile came up whilst we were working on an online degree-show gallery in my current job. Sroop was graduating from Central Saint Martin’s BA Graphic Design course and for me, her sumptuous-looking vintage Indian matchbox work stood head and shoulders above the rest.

There’s so much high contrast colour and heavy print treatment that it almost kickstarts the eyes into a disarming kaleidoscopic eye routine. I also absolutely love the quirky handmade humour that Sroop injects into each of her pieces – there is the amiable pigeon-English that drowns any serious intentions of the work as a regular form of advertising. Then there’s the misuse of classic phrases and mixed up iconography that one can’t help but find endearing – Something which I have experienced first-hand in India myself.

I love where this sort of design comes from and the effect it has on me and I would love to see some of these works collected in a nice little artist book. Sroop has some top-shelf work on her website, including some new of his new ventures for Howies, BP and Habitat. Very much worth a look.
