It seems that winter’s relentless grip is at last weakening. There is a pleasant aura in March. The air feels clean – cooled by winter but slowly warming in the afternoons. The birds too have suddenly starting making noises at dusk and there is a watery pale blue in the sky for longer. There is movement again and a sense that energy is being kindled. It is the perfect time of year to dig out my old Ceephax Acid Crew tunes.

I didn’t really want to highlight the fact that Ceephax Acid Crew (AKA Andy Jenkinson) is the brother of Squarepusher (AKA Tom Jenkinson) because I feel that he deserves the standalone credit for being the skilled musician that he is. But it is a fact and I think it goes some way to explaining where the two of them meet and where the two of them erratically slide off in different directions from each other in a cloud of fuzzy TV static. As a fan of both artists, I can truly say that I admire the homegrown pedigree of Ceephax Acid Crew a wee bit more. He’s at his happiest taking trips to the British seaside or quiet local pub where he sees past the dutiful outer skin and discovers a world of vectors, electric smudges, coloured fogs, curious human ventures and ornamental obstacles. He seems able to capture all this confusion and quirk in his cheeky acid-drenched tunes.

If you’re going try one of his albums go for the deep and frothy Exidy Tours from back in 2003. This superbly low-fi album is as rough and sharp as a lemon but it has wonderful moments of tenderness and some impressive moments of electronic music mastery. It’s perhaps an album that should have sat happily in the Warp Records catalogue – but for some reason it seems more at home where it is – brimming with quiet rave confidence on the outskirts of the M25.

Check his website out too. I’d love to point you to a specific section, but all sections are worth a visit. The gallery always get me sets me off… Some truly great biro works in there! I happen to love the way the site is designed too. It contravenes every rule in the book and it doesn’t really care whether you come or not.

His latest album, United Acid Emirates is out on Planet Mu and the cover art is Ceephax to a tea!
